Getting Things Figured Out

I have to say that WordPress has been easier to use than the myriad other CMSâ€™s Iâ€™ve tried. I have tried a lot of them, and not only .NET based, but also PHP based. The biggest boon with WordPress is simply the unbelievable plethora of community created plugins and themes, so many of which are freely available. Itâ€™s really a game changer.

I always like to do things myself, as I am a technologist and like to get my hands dirty on all levels of technology. But WordPress is just too easy to pass up. Thereâ€¦ I said it.

I give up… I’ve converted to WordPress as my CMS/Blog engine. I really didn’t want to add PHP and MySQL to my server, as it’s a Windows server and already running MSSQL, but I bit the bullet and did it anyway. Over the years, I’ve been very impressed with many things WordPress does, and I think especially the community support it enjoys. It’s an extremely popular platform, and for good reason. So, standby as I try to get everything up to snuff one more time!

I think I’ll probably skip forums for now. If people ask for forums, I’ll add them. Otherwise, I’ll just stick to the blog and galleries… and maybe an about page and a contact form… but nothing more for the time being. I think you’ll enjoy this version of the website a lot more than previous versions, both from a visual and functional perspective.

First Live Gallery

I’ve gone through the pics from my phone, and added the first live gallery. Up until now, I’ve only had a test gallery in place. I’ll add more galleries as I have time to do so. This will be an ongoing process for some time, so hang in there with me.

Nabble.com is borked! So they don’t tell you up front that you have to pay if you want your Nabble forums to be ad-free! Only after you set them up do you see that your forums are only ad-free for 30 days, after which ads will appear, unless you purchase a license. Screw that!!!

I put Yet Another Forum in an iFrame. That will be good enough for me.

Progress report

I was unable to integrate YAF. However, there was a package which would allow a forum created on Nabble.com to be embedded on a page. So I created a forum there, and embedded it. It works pretty nicely, even though I really wanted to keep everything on my server. Oh well, I guess it will do the job!
